A food bank is a critical institution that plays a vital role in addressing food insecurity and providing assistance to individuals and communities in need. While traditional food banks have been effective in distributing food and meeting immediate hunger needs, a radical and holistic approach to their design is necessary to tackle the rise in food insecurity stemming from the increasing dangers of climate change and constant economic shifts.
CFC proposes a new model for the food-bank which embraces a self-reliant system to tackle food insecurity while emphasizing community engagement, nutritional education, and sustainability. It is a recognition that our systems are failing us and we need a radical shift to community-focused systems of governance to foster resilience in the face our changing world.
The facility houses an 800sqm food resiliency center, housing an aquaponics lab, a farm, and an educational kitchen. The center produces various nutritional sources year round to reduce the need for donations. Protein sources come from dairy products from goats milk, farmed fish, and from chickens eggs. Fruit, vegtables and legumes are grown year round in the expansive vertical gardens. The center is a contemporary approach to providing a locally sourced solution to food insecurity.
