The Canadian housing crisis has created an unsustainable demand for housing that has priced families out of their communities and created an ever growing demand for thoughtfully planned cities. Nesting Communities is a perimeter block housing typology proposal for the city of Bramalea in Ontario that brings families together. The complex is part of a larger proposal for a densification of an existing tower neighbourhood beside Bramalea city centre. The focus of the proposal is to create a plethora of dedicated community spaces that allow families to grow and enrich the communities they live in. The housing complex is designed as a co-operative system that collectively owns the bottom two floors of retail spaces, and manages the other eight floors of residential units and amenity spaces. The permitter block houses five unit types that offer varied living arrangements for Bramalea’s larger family sizes. Units are designed larger than average with layouts that are configurable to Canada’s many family dynamics. Nesting Communities is the aspiration of an all-in-one community typology that can serve everyone.
